Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant run by the American-based Miss Universe Organization. It started in 1952 and now airs in more than 190 countries worldwide with more than half a billion viewers annually. It’s considered to be one of the most culturally influential as well as expensive international events in the world.

15. Maritza Sayalero – 1979

Maritza was crowned both Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe in 1979 at the age of 18. She was the first woman from Venezuela to win the title. Maritza was the undeniable leader of the night; she won the swimsuit, interview and evening gown competitions at the pageant. Aside from being a beauty queen, she also has ventures of her own that she is passionate about.

Now, Maritza is a designer, model, and businesswoman. She is married to Mexican tennis player Raúl Ramírez, and they have been living in Mexico since 1981. She became a legend after her win. She even has a ship named in her honor.

14. Dayana Mendoza – 2008

Dayana Sabrina Mendoza Moncada another Venezuelan beauty to receive the title of Miss Universe. She won in 2008 when she was 22. She is a model and actress. She had won Miss Venezuela the year before in 2007. Dayana became only the second woman representing the Amazonas state (of Venezuela) to win.

Believe it or not, Dayana was once kidnapped in Venezuela. She stated that the trauma taught her how to stay poised under pressure. She has modeled for the companies Max Mara and Costume National and has worked in New York City, Italy, Germany, France, Greece, and Spain for Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and other high-end fashion designers. She also speaks Spanish, English, and Italian fluently.

The next Miss Universe can be seen in the wildly popular music video for “Despacito.”

13. Zuleyka Rivera – 2006

Zuleyka Jerrís Rivera Mendoza was 19 when she won the title of Miss Universe in 2006. She is Puerto Rican and is also an actress, TV host, dancer, and model. The beauty queen also won the title of Miss Puerto Rico Universe in the same year.

She made her entrance into the television scene as a telenovela actress in Mexico’s Telemundo’s soap opera Dame Chocolate in 2007. She was also featured in the music video for “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi.

12. Shawn Weatherly – 1980

Shawn Nichols Weatherly was 21 when she won the pageant title. She’s an American actress who also won the title of Miss USA in the same year. After her success on the beauty queen stage, she went on to star in some films, including the 1986 comedy Police Academy 3: Back in Training, and as Jill Riley in the first season of the TV series Baywatch which aired from 1989–90.

Shawn was born in San Antonio, Texas. Her mother was a former Christian Dior model, and her father was a member of the US Air Force. In 1994, she married Chip Harris, who is the president of a biotech research company. They have two children together.

11. Apasra Hongsakula – 1965

Apasra Hongsakula is from Thailand. She was 18 when she won the title of Miss Universe 1965. She was also a model and the first woman from Thailand to win the Miss Universe crown in history.

She married a first cousin of Queen Sirikit who was the queen mother of Thailand. Apparently, she got advice from Queen Sirikit about how to pose and how to walk in the pageant before she went to Miami for the show.

10. Olivia Culpo – 2012

Olivia Frances Culpo is an American model, actress and beauty queen. She won Miss Universe 2012 when she was 20 years old. She also won Miss Rhode Island USA, which was the first pageant she ever entered. She has then crowned Miss USA and then Miss Universe. She became the first winner from the United States to be named Miss Universe since Brook Lee won in 1997.

She has gone on to have small roles in TV and movies and has modeled for the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue as well as L’Oréal and Kipling.

9. Christiane Martel – 1953

Christiane Martel is now an 89-year-old woman but she was 21 when she was crowned Miss Universe 1953. She is a French actress who became the second woman to win Miss Universe. She was also the only Frenchwoman holding the title until Iris Mittenaere won in 2016.

After her beauty pageant career, Christiane embarked on a successful career in international films. She appeared in movies such as Yankee Pasha, and So This Is Paris.

8. Lara Dutta – 2000

Lara Dutta is an Indian actress, model and beauty queen who won her title of Miss Intercontinental in 1997 as well as Miss Universe 2000. She was 22 years old when she won in 2000. She’s the second woman from India to be crowned Miss Universe, being the only delegate from India to win the crown since.

She later began to receive offers to act in movies. She’s mainly known for her work in Hindi films, but she also appeared in Tamil language films as well. Lara is an active yogi, offering a number of videos on YouTube, particularly for prenatal yoga.

7. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters – 2017

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is a South African model that won Miss Universe in 2017 when she was 22 years old. She was crowned Miss South Africa 2017 and is the second Miss Universe winner from South Africa.

Demi-Leigh modeled her way through her studies. While earning her bachelor’s degree in business management and entrepreneurship, she modeled part-time for Boss Models and Vision Management Cape Town. She is also fluent in both English and Afrikaans (a Germanic language spoken in South Africa).

6. Ximena Navarrete – 2010

Jimena “Ximena” Navarrete Rosete is a Mexican actress, TV Host, and model who Miss Universe 2010 at the age of 22. She became the second Mexican to win the title. She was previously named as Nuestra Belleza México 2009.

She started to model at the age of sixteen, and studied nutrition at the Valle de Atemajac University, before beginning her phase of pageantry. In February of 2011, Ximena became the spokesperson of L’Oreal Paris and Old Navy.

5. Iris Mittenaere – 2016

Iris Mittenaere is a French model, television presenter, and won the crown for Miss Universe 2016 and Miss France 2016 when she was 23 years old. She is the second Miss Universe from France after Christiane Martel.

Iris has big plans for her future outside of the pageantry world. In 2011, Iris graduated with a degree in science and is now studying dentistry. She plans on becoming a dental surgeon after graduating.

4. Jennifer Hawkins – 2004

Jennifer Hawkins was 21 when she won Miss Universe in 2004. She is an Australian model, television presenter and beauty queen who has also crowned Miss Universe Australia in the same year.

3. Natalie Glebova – 2005

Natalie Glebova is a Russian-Canadian television host, author, dancer, model, and won the beauty pageant title when she was 24 years old. Glebova has also crowned Miss Universe Canada in 2005.

As a child, Natalie studied classical piano and competed in rhythmic gymnastics. She went on to marry Panamanian model and Mister Panamá 2001 Dean Kelly in 2016. They have one daughter together and live in Bangkok, Thailand.

2. Oxana Fedorova – 2002

Oxana Gennadyevna Borodina, known professionally as Oxana Fedorova, is a Russian television presenter, singer, actress, fashion designer, and model. When she was 25, she won Miss Universe in 2002, becoming the first Russian entrant to win Miss Universe.

Oxana was a former police officer. But after her reign of beauty, she began a career in television, hosting shows such as Good Night, Little Ones! and Fort Boyard: Russia. She has also contributed to numerous charity projects, becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, formerly known in the Philippine entertainment and modeling industry as Pia Romero, is a Filipina-German beauty queen. At the age of 26, she won Miss Universe 2015. She’s also model and actress.
