The first traffic signal was invented in 1868 by JP Knight. He was a railway signaling engineer. The traffic signal was installed outside the Houses of Parliament. The signal looked like any railway signal of the time. It had semaphore arms and red-green lamps and was operated by gas. However, it exploded and killed a policeman.
