In October 2001, the US began bombing Afghanistan, targeting Bin Laden’s al-Qaeda fighters as well as the Taliban. The US Government deployed US soldiers to Afghanistan with the aim of dismantling al-Qaeda and denying the organization a safe base of operations by removing the Taliban from power.

The Taliban declined to extradite Bin Laden unless they were given what they deemed to be “convincing evidence” of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks, ignoring demands to shut down terrorist bases and hand over other terrorist suspects. And so, the long US war in Afghanistan began.
