Welcome to the Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss: The Man Behind the Legend

“The Lorax” and a Monkey in Kenya

As the story goes, Dr. Seuss likely wrote “The Lorax” after seeing a particular species of a monkey when on a trip to Kenya. Evolutionary biologist Nathaniel Dominiy told Popular Science that when he was in Kenya, he noticed a monkey near Mount Kenya, the patas monkey, that looked very similar to the fictional Lorax. As it turns out, Seuss stayed at a resort in Kenya, which leads Dominiy to believe that the monkey was an inspiration for Dr. Seuss.

If you haven’t read “The Lorax,” it’s recognized as Dr. Seuss’ take on environmentalism and how humans are basically destroying nature. As a result, loggers more than just upset about the book and some groups within the industry-sponsored a book called “The Truax,” which provided a logging point of view.
