And That’s the Way it Is: Walter Cronkite, the Broadcast Journalist Legend

A Boy From Missouri

Walter Cronkite, an only child, was born on November 4, 1916, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He spent the first ten years of his life in Kansas City, after which his family moved to Houston, Texas (in 1927) for a dentistry job his dad secured.

Growing up, he was known as a curious and observant boy. He studied encyclopedias and would always record his daily observations in a notebook. Young Walter was an avid reader of books, magazines, and newspapers.
