As you can imagine, the Wachowskis put in a ton of work during the pre-production phase of the first film. They wanted the action scenes to be hyper-realistic. Remember when the attack helicopter exploded into a building in slow-motion? The Wachowski’s wanted that scene to be the “definitive action scene.”

So, what did they do? They asked their special effects crew to study it like they were trying to get into med school. They needed to know how glass reacts to an exploding helicopter and all the physics of it. The research for that scene took three months and it was almost removed because it was costing them a fortune. But it came to life, and wow did it make an impact.
