I Can Make It on My Own – Music Stars That Had Their Start in a Group or Band

It’s not always easy taking center stage. You have to have a lot of confidence and really know what you are doing. These music stars gained that confidence by developing it in their group or band.


Known just under one name, Beyoncé has conquered the charts and reigns as queen of all the divas. All her tours are absolute sellouts and she is known to be a perfectionist and a very hard worker. Currently, she is one of the biggest stars in music today.

It wasn’t always this way though. Beyoncé climbed to the top after being in the girl group Destiny’s Child which was made up of Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. They did exceptionally well and cemented their status as one of the best girl groups of all time with hits such as “Say My Name”, “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Independent Women.” They eventually decided to split and sent the statement “After all these wonderful years working together, we realized that now is the time to pursue our personal goals and solo efforts in earnest. … No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists.”

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake is a huge star today. He’s not only a great singer and dancer but an actor as well. He performed at the 2018 Super Bowl which was a huge honor and has worked with The Black Eyed Peas, Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and more.

As most people know, Justin Timberlake started out in the hugely successful and commercial band NSYNC. They were often competing for airtime against The Backstreet Boys. Back then, Justin had a set of golden curls and was dating Britney Spears.

Britney Spears

Speaking of the one and only Britney Spears, not many people know that she was in a music group before she went solo and we’re not talking about The Mickey Mouse Club. Britney is a huge star. She has been one of the most followed around celebrities on earth.

Before Britney became the Britney we all know and love, she was in a music group called Innosense with a few other girls. Obviously, her talent stood out and she was pushed to be a solo artist and thank goodness for that!


Pink or Alicia Beth Moore is a very talented and unique singer who does her own thing. Lately, not only does she sing in her shows but does aero and acrobatics and shows off her amazingly supple body. She really rocks and has a very powerful voice.

Before Pink was Pink, or Mr. Pink as she had originally wanted, Pink was part of the girl group Choice in 1995. LaFace Records saw potential in her and offered her a solo contract. She was obviously the strongest member of her band and thank goodness for us she went solo because what would music be today without Pink.

Imagine” is one of the most beautiful songs that was ever created. The lyrics are pure poetry. It’s a tragedy what happened to him but in his solo career, he certainly stood as one of the most amazing musical artists of all time.

Chris Cornell

Chris Cornell had a unique and beautiful voice that carried through the airwaves. As a solo artist, he had the hits “Ferry Boat #3”, “Ghosts”, “Moonchild”, “Sunshower”, “When I’m Down” and more. Unfortunately, Chris took his own life in 2018 and the world mourned his death.

Dr. Dre has had a slew of hits. He has also been the man behind major artists such as Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar. Personally, he came out with own hits “Still D.R.E.”, “I Need a Doctor”, “Dre Day” and more.

Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and fourth in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time”. He was also named number five in Time magazine’s list of “The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players” in 2009.

In the mid-1960s Clapton left the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers.
