If any of us have a guilty pleasure, it’s watching reality TV. Mind you, with the sheer amount of reality shows on the tube today, it’s no longer something to really feel guilty about. It’s pretty hard not to watch a reality show these days. That’s if we’re talking about the ones on air today.

But what about the reality shows in the 1990s and early 2000s? The shows like “Survivor”, “The Real World”, and “Big Brother” were among the first reality programs that captivated audiences all over the nation. Since then, reality has become the genre of choice for many viewers. Why? Because it’s so darn entertaining! We only wish our daily lives were as distracting, comical, and compelling as the ones we see on TV.

In celebration of our obsession with reality television, we put together a list of the top 40 shows from the 90s to today, with some no longer on air and some still signing on for more seasons. Quite a few of these shows even won Emmy Awards not once, or twice, but multiple times. By the way, the first Emmy awarded to a reality program was in 2003.

40. Intervention (2005 – )

“Intervention” is the type of reality show that isn’t gossipy in the slightest yet incredibly fascinating and real. The show is still running and it’s the kind of thing you want to watch if you want to realize how good your life is in comparison. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a show about people who have all kinds of addictions.

But doesn’t just showcase the individuals and their habits – it goes into their childhood, exposing the reason they fell into addiction in the first place. And most importantly, it directs them towards rehab and recovery. The show has already won 2 Emmy Awards and 16 other nominations. And trust us, those who make the show deserve it.
