How it All Started
Leonard Slye, aka Roy Rogers, was born on November 5, 1911, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Mattie and Andrew Slye. The Slye family lived in a tenement building, which was located where Riverfront Stadium would later be built. Roy often joked about how he’d been born at second base.
A few years after Leonard came into the world his family moved out West to pursue a better life. They bought a farm outside of Portsmouth. Sadly, the farm didn’t bring in enough income for the Slye family, and Roy’s father had to work another job during the week , at a shoe factory.
