Not What It Seems
On stage, and on the screen, Garland looks like a picture-perfect star. Sadly, there wasn’t much happiness going on behind the scenes. Garland suffered a great deal of pain in her childhood, and it got worse as she got older. As a child, her family life was very unstable.

When the actress looked back at her parent’s marriage, she revealed, “My parents were separating and getting back together all the time. It was very hard for me to understand those things, and, of course, I remember clearly the fear I had of those separations.” Children learn about relationships from watching their parents. This wasn’t a positive example for Garland, which may help explain all of her failed and heartbreaking relationships.
